I have two news about our railways. First we're probably gonna get a new EMU within sight. It's multi system class 671 [link] [link] , its origin comes out of DC EMU class 471 "Alluminium" [link] and except pendolino it will be the only multi system EMU ČD or ZSSK will be running. Its max speed will be 160 km/h. The original 471s are quite popular in Czech Republic but in Slovakia they're not used - some of them just arrive from the north-western borders of our country. But almost every inch of electrified lines of CzR or Svk is occupied by my beloved and so popular EMUs 460 "Tornado" (DC) [link] and 560 "Pantograph" (AC) [link] [link] so now I fear that this new EMU will put an end to their kingdom and they'll all end in scrap metal. Funny fact is that uber-old EMU classes 451 [link] and 452 [link] (both named "Frogs")are stil being run in Prague and neighbourhood.

The second new is a wide gauge line is being planned to be built from our eastern borders with Ukraine all the way to Pressburg and even Wien. The plan is still being studied whether it's economical or not to build this line. Also this one has its pros and cons. The greatest disadvantage is, that our freight transport will suffer great losses 'cause this new line is built solely for freight purposes. There will be no more super-long trains running under High Tatras and on top of that many people in the transship dock at the border are gonna lose their jobs.
And I don't even know whether this new line will be DC or AC but when it's finished I expect many humongous eastern engines like ChS4T [link] to be seen running on this line. The line should be built around year 2017.

[link] ChS4T again. It's so huge it even scares me a bit :iconoo-plz:

All the way to Vienna? That would be unlikely in my opinion, but who knows what they're gonna build after all :) I think it will be AC, as DC requires much thicker catenary and pantographs, due to the higher currents. Also AC is more economic on longer distances :)

More wide gauge? That sounds like a very, very bad idea to me. Nobody in central europe has wide-gauge locomotives and purchasing them just for this line would be too expensive. Basically, the Ukraine would get a monopoly on the line.

Yeah but whole Ukraine is running on DC and I doubt it would save so much energy and money to build an AC line although in the ages of multi system engines it doesn't seem to be so great problem anymore. I bet it's more annoying to switch a system too often. it has to be done while the train is running on some momentum.

Oh we also have one wide gauge class 125 "Siamesse Twins" [link] because of the extended line from the border to our eastern city Koshice where an iron forge is residing. So we can transport the ore all the way from ukraine.

Interesting, I didn't know that!

Still this looks rather old. All the really modern locomotives (Bombardier TRAXX, Siemens EuroSprinter, Skoda 109 E) are in normal gauge. Producing wide-gauge versions of them is possible (Spain has ordered some from Bombardier for their even wider gauge), but it's not something you can just rent from the next leasing company.

I agree with :iconshenanigan87: on the electricity, though: Any modern high-performance line will be using AC. A good example for that is the dutch Betuweroute, a new freight line from the harbor in Rotterdam to Oberstdorf in Germany. It is built for extremely high levels of traffic. Now, everything else in the Netherlands is electrified with 1.5 kV DC, including the harbor in Rotterdam. The new line, however, uses 25kV AC (which is, by the way, not the same as what is used in Germany), except for some pieces shared with older routes that are 1.5kV DC. There are a lot of places where the currency has to be changed and the locomotives are more expensive, but in the long term, it's worth it.

By the way, rolling a little with momentum isn't new or unusual for electric locomotives. Most (or possibly all) networks are divided in subsections, fed by an individual transformer (and rectifier if it's DC). When a locomotive leaves a subsection, it also has to coast for a meter or two to prevent problems, and that always works without problems.

LOLZ the new EMU is definetly not wide gauge but multi system. i.e. runs both on DC kV and AC 25kV/50Hz

And about the rolling with a momentum,it's not a problem but I bet it's annoying to switch the system too often...
